About 50 km out of Whitecourt the ‘check battery’ light came on. This isn’t normal, so I adjusted my guages inside so that I could see the battery output voltage, and sure enough it was hovering around the 12V when it should be up around 13.8V or almost 14V under load. When the alternator failed about 4 or 5 months ago, it left the truck with a very limited life span on battery power before it is completely dead and stops running. Fortunately we were able to nurse it along and make it into Whitecourt.  We found a Napa Autopro garage that is family run, and they are helping us out. Turns out though that there isn’t a single place in Whitecourt with a replacement in stock, so we had no choice but to find a campground for the night. We have now checked into the Lions Campground (Goodsam) and it’s actually a really nice site. Lots of space with grass, power & water hookups.  As it turns out, Travis, Tyler and Grandma are on-route from Vernon to Peace River right now, and we were able to find an alternator in Edson that they will be picking up. If all goes well, we should be back on the road around 4 pm and won’t  need the campsite after all.  Oh well, we are resting now and had lunch here so all is well.  The root of the problem appears to be a bolt that came out of the alternator housing that possibly let the case get misaligned, causing internal damage.  There’s no way of getting around putting a new one in.
